🌰 Are almonds suitable to eat if you are histamine intolerant?

They are listed as medium = 🤔on our Histamine Intolerance Food List. But let’s dive into more detail.

Almond is one of those nuts that people with histamine intolerance seem to vary on quite considerably. Some people seem to tolerate almonds just fine, but others can’t go near them. It’s one of the great frustrations of histamine intolerance. The SIGHI scale lists it as a ‘1’ and notes that small amounts are well tolerated. However when I have done polls on my instagram on almonds, a large percentage of people struggle with them.

And let’s consider my experience.

I have an almond butter obsession, but I find it a mild histamine release. It definitely helps if the almonds are activated (soaked etc) first. ⁣In the past, sometimes almonds were okay, sometimes they were not. It was infuriating. ⁣

Here’s what’s interesting though. As I’ve started to follow the low histamine diet listed on this website, I've been able to start introducing food again. A little bit of yoghurt, a bite of avocado, even some alcohol. And probably the thing I have been most successful in reintroducing has been nuts. I couldn't look at that before, but now almonds and pistachios seem to be tolerated in small quantities. I currently though find that hazelnuts and pistachios are better tolerated than almonds.

So almonds = 🤔

Work on lowering that histamine bucket, and then give them a go. Remember…

  • Eat activated nuts

  • Eat small portions

  • Test carefully

  • Lower your histamine bucket in other areas to help your tolerance.

Walnuts and cashews are higher in histamine and would be one of the last on the list to reintroduce.
