Methylation and Histamine Intolerance

Methylation issues often lead to histamine-related symptoms. ⁣
They do with me. ⁣

When I first found out about methylation, I was excited. ⁣
I started taking max-dose methylation supplements. For two weeks I felt incredible. Like, best ever. ⁣
⁣There was a spring in my step and I had so much energy. And then - the worst crash. I was extremely nauseous and ill for two months. Two MONTHS! ⁣
⁣What had happened was my body was so excited at getting all these new nutrients, it started #detoxing way too quick. I then had a load of #toxins swimming around in my system. ⁣
⁣Nice. (That’s probably not the technical way of describing it but there you go.)⁣

So WARNING: Don’t try this at home, folks. Methylation ideally be undertaken with the help of your doctor or practitioner, especially if you are histamine intolerant. ⁣
⁣Methylation can often be quite an important piece of the puzzle. And methylation issues are sometimes related to genetics. But what the hell is methylation? Over to @chriskresser.

Methylation is a vital metabolic process that happens in every cell and every organ of our body. Life would simply not exist without it. It takes place more than a billion times per second in the body. That should give you some idea of how important methylation is. Anything that’s happening a billion times per second is probably pretty crucial to our survival and well-being. It happens when one molecule passes a methyl group, which is a carbon atom linked to three hydrogens, to another molecule, so it’s a pretty basic biochemical process. ⁣

Thanks Chris for explaining it way better than me.

⁣Many of us in the histamine intolerance community don’t methylate very well. I’m in that camp, for sure. And when we start to methylate better, it could be the moment our #histamine symptoms start to improve.

I’m still working on this now, five years after the episode I described above.
Today I can take way more than I used to, but my #homocysteine levels are still a bit high. ⁣More to do. ⁣
